Queen Louise of Prussia Miniature Gustav Richter Gilt Framed Porcelain Painting

Queen Louise (1776-1810) of Prussia fine miniature painting in ornate gilt wood frame.

German hand-painted oval porcelain portrait plaque of Queen Louise of Prussia, framed in a wonderful elaborate, carved, and pierced giltwood scroll frame. The painting is created after the famous 1879 painting by German artist Gustav Richter.

Queen Louise was a fierce political opponent and national symbol of resistance against Napoleon Bonaparte during the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleon famously called the Queen "the only real man in Prussia", a backhanded compliment that contrasted her political courage with the perceived passivity of her husband, King Frederick William III. During the war, Napoleon attempted to destroy her reputation, but the only effect was to make her more deeply beloved.

Excellent condition, the frame shows some loss of paint and there is potentially a repair or crack at the lower left base, as photographed. Overall the frame is solid considering age and quite beautiful.

Back of porcelain has number "85" impressed.

Frame measures 7 3/4" tall x 6 1/2"

Porcelain measures 3 1/4" x 2 3/4".
